The BIS Student Chapter of Assam Engineering College (AEC) organized an industrial visit to the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) in Umiam, Meghalaya, on June 9, 2026. Sponsored by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Guwahati Branch Office, the visit provided Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) students with firsthand exposure to geospatial computing, big data architectures, and advanced technologies.
During the technical sessions, NESAC scientists demonstrated how massive datasets are managed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing to drive socio-economic development across the North Eastern region. For the future engineers, a major highlight was exploring the digital platforms and geospatial decision-support systems developed by NESAC for public governance—including automated software applications for land record tracking, infrastructure monitoring, and election management.
Students also toured the Geoinformatics and Information Technology Division to see how the organization maintains extensive databases used for real-time disaster management and spatial analysis by agencies like the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The tour concluded with an inspection of UAV platforms and their data processing techniques.
The visit underscored a vital industry takeaway: the critical role of data standardization, quality assurance, and system interoperability in building reliable, large-scale technology frameworks, directly aligning with the mission of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
