Established in 1963 as the fourth department of Assam Engineering College, the Department of Chemical Engineering is the oldest of its kind in Northeast India. The department offers B.Tech and PhD programs focussing on core principles and emerging areas of chemical engineering. The department started UG in Chemical Engineering with an annual student intake capacity of 30 which has been increased to 60 since the academic batch enrolled in 2007-08.

The faculty members of Chemical Engineering department are dedicated to excellence in teaching and research in traditional domains and in the advanced interdisciplinary topics based on materials, energy, environment and process systems. With a strong track record of academic and professional success, alumni from the department hold respectable positions globally, contributing significantly to academia and industry. This department hosts a number of laboratory facilities in the areas such as chemical reaction engineering, mass transfer operations, heat transfer operations, mechanical operations, fluid flow operations, energy technology, petroleum refining and petrochemicals, environmental pollution control engineering and process dynamics and control. An advanced analytical laboratory housing various sophisticated analytical instrument facilities such as TGA, HPLC, LPSA etc is also being set up under the aegis of Numaligarh Refinery Limited.

The B.Tech in Chemical Engineering program of the department has been accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) since the year 2018. The department is also closely associated with IIChE (Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers) - the largest professional body of Chemical Engineers in India, with the faculty members holding lifetime memberships and students actively involved in various activities under IIChE AEC Student Chapter. Committed to excellence, the department continues to strive for greater achievements and aims to produce top-tier chemical engineers who meet the rising needs of industry and academia.
